Tomorrow Is a Long Time

(„Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II”, 1971)
słowa i muzyka: Bob Dylan

If …

Tomorrow Is a Long Time”, is a song written and recorded by Bob Dylan. It is taken from the Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volume II compilation first released in 1971. It was subsequently also added to the rare triple LP compilation, Masterpieces. It is an exclusive live recording made during his famous Town Hall concert on April 12, 1963. A demo of the song was recorded in December 1962 as a part of the „Witmark Demos”, a studio session that has been commonly bootlegged over the years. While other songs from these sessions have come to be officially released, this take is still only available as a bootleg. This live version was never released as a single. Another version of the song was recorded during the sessions for „New Morning”, which has also been bootlegged.
Several versions of this song were released before Dylan's Town Hall recording. Ian and Sylvia recorded the song in 1964, and Odetta included it on her 1965 Odetta Sings Dylan album. In 1966, Elvis Presley recorded the song which appeared as a bonus track on the soundtrack album of the film Spinout: Bob Dylan said this was his favorite cover version of any of his songs.
The song has also been covered by Harry Belafonte, Nickel Creek, Nick Drake, Rod Stewart, Dion, Chris Hillman, Joan Baez, The Kingston Trio, Sandy Denny, Danielle Howle, The Silkie, Rosalie Sorrels, Judy Collins, Dream City Film Club, and The Black Family (band). A number of Swedish bands have covered the songs under the translation title Bara om min älskade vänta (Only if My Lover Waits); Nationalteatern and Joakim Thåström are two of the more well-known.
